Savage

20 Feb

The writing is exquisite, the story grim, fictional but inspired by the Chillicothe Six murders, which remain unsolved. So it is grim, sad and desperate, but you should not look away.

On the Savage Side is its title, by Tiffany McDaniel, who recently had another publishing success story with the novel, Betty.

McDaniel’s book is a story told before, remnants in the pages of Real Easy by Marie Rutkoski, The Van Apfel Girls are Gone by Felicity McLean, and My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell. All stories blurring the lines of fact and fiction in their depictions of girlhood, or girlhood gone wrong.

Tiffany McDaniel captures the nuances of girlhood on the savage side and on the beautiful side, too, and slowly reveals its utter devastation.

There is Daffodil Poet, Arc, Aunt Clover, Sage Nell, Thursday, Indigo and Violet, Addie, a sister, a daughter, a mother, a grandmother, all of whom, you will not soon forget.
